The Nikon Monarch M5 gets a lot right for the money, in a compact, light body that's comfortable to hold. Reviewers liked the ergonomic rubber armoring, the smooth focus mechanism, and the fully multi-coated optics. The recurring complaint is field of view: the 8x42 covers just 335 feet at 1,000 yards. Nitrogen purging makes it waterproof, fogproof, and shockproof for outdoor use. Birding and general observation suit it, but that narrow view makes tracking fast-moving subjects harder.

The Vortex Viper HD 10x42 improves on the model it replaces, mostly on the optical side, with strong astigmatism and chromatic aberration correction. Reviewers measured a wider 6.65-degree field of view and very little light fall-off across the image field. Construction is solid, with a waterproof, argon-filled body and a lifetime warranty behind it. The knocks: transmission efficiency drew criticism, and minimum focusing distance grew to 1.90 meters from the previous model's 1.7 meters.
