Alaska Bear Natural Silk Pillowcase 19 Momme

Averaged from 1 published rating + 2 derived from review text
The verdict

Alaska Bear is the entry point: real 100% Grade 6A mulberry silk with OEKO-TEX certification at roughly a third of the premium brands' pricing. Its 19-momme weave is genuinely thinner than the 22-momme cases. For first-time silk buyers who aren't ready to spend $70+ on a single pillowcase, it covers the core silk benefits at the lowest viable entry price.

Alaska Bear Natural Silk Pillowcase 19 Momme

Full review

Real mulberry silk at the bottom of the market

Alaska Bear is Amazon's perennial top seller in this category because it delivers genuine Grade 6A mulberry silk at a price nothing else matches. Ideal Home's reviewer described it as super soft and silky to the touch and good for frizzy hair, or as a hypoallergenic surface for sleepers with eczema or allergies. Friction reduction is the mechanism behind almost every silk-pillowcase claim, and a 19-momme weave delivers it even with less mass than heavier silk.

The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification matters more at this price than at any other. Cheap satin cases sold as silk often carry dyes and finishes that irritate sensitive skin; the certification is a tested baseline against a long list of restricted substances. Get My Sleep points to the same benefit for acne-prone and sensitive skin, where silk is less irritating than cotton or synthetic satin.

Nineteen momme is the floor, and you can feel it

Nineteen momme is about the lightest weight considered adequate for a daily-use silk pillowcase, and the difference against a 22-momme case is obvious in hand: this one drapes more loosely, without the dense fall of heavier silk. BuzzFeed framed it as the perfect entry-level silk pillowcase, with the qualifier that it lacks the heft of the premium brands.

The 600 thread count and the Grade 6A grading offset some of that. Grade 6A is the highest commercial grade, meaning the longest and most uniform fibres regardless of weight class, so there is less silk here but the silk present is the same fibre the expensive cases use. It reads as recognisably silky against the cheek. It does not read as luxurious.

Cooling comes from the fibre, not the weight

Get My Sleep called the temperature regulation well suited to people who sleep hot, and the physics supports it: cooling in silk is a property of the fibre, so a 19-momme case cools on first contact about as well as a 22-momme one, and the thinner fabric may hold marginally less heat. Ideal Home's tester described the surface as suited to hot, sticky nights and comparable to much more expensive silk. For hot-flash disruption or warm-climate summers on a budget, the core benefit is genuinely present.

Plan on replacing it

Alaska Bear recommends hand washing cold with a mild detergent; machine washing on gentle in a mesh bag is tolerated rather than preferred, because the lighter weave is more vulnerable to agitation. Get My Sleep notes the case lasts well with proper care, but Ideal Home is clear that a lower momme will lose some of its silkiness over time and eventually need replacing, and owner reports describe the surface roughening after extended use. Budgeting for a replacement every eighteen to twenty-four months is the honest way to think about it, and at this price that is affordable in a way replacing a premium case is not.

The zipper, the packaging and the return window

Ideal Home was direct about the budget-feel details: the zipper feels a little cheap, the care labels are basic, and the packaging does not feel like unwrapping something special. None of that touches the silk against your cheek, but it rules the case out as a gift and it is a real gap against the presentation of the direct-to-consumer brands. There is also no formal sleep trial here — you have the Amazon return window and nothing after it.

Why it still makes sense

Against the 22-momme cases from Quince and Brooklinen, and the 25-momme LilySilk, this is thinner, lighter and less polished at a fraction of the cost, with the same fibre grade and the same chemical-safety certification. It is the right buy for a first-time silk buyer testing whether silk actually helps, for a second or third case on a guest bed, and for anyone who wants the anti-friction benefit without a premium price. It is the wrong buy if drape and heft are what you are paying for.

Watch-outs

  • Softness can degrade after repeated machine washes
  • No formal sleep trial — Amazon return policy only

How it compares

Genuinely thinner-feeling than the 22-momme Quince 100% Mulberry Silk Pillowcase and the 22-momme Brooklinen Mulberry Silk Pillowcase 22 Momme, but at a third of the price of Quince's and roughly a sixth of the price of the Blissy 100% Mulberry 22-Momme Silk Pillowcase. Lighter than every other pillowcase in this round-up — the LilySilk 25 Momme Terse Envelope Luxury Pillowcase has roughly 32 percent more silk per unit area. The trade-off is honest: less silk, less polish, much lower price.

How it compares

See all 5
Brooklinen Mulberry Silk Pillowcase 22 Momme
#1 · Top Score

Brooklinen Mulberry Silk Pillowcase 22 Momme

More polished than the Quince 100% Mulberry Silk Pillowcase and built on the same 22-momme charmeuse, but with a year-long trial and envelope closure that the Quince lacks. Less luxurious in hand than the LilySilk 25 Momme Terse Envelope Luxury Pillowcase, which weighs more and drapes denser. Doesn't market the antibacterial or clinical claims that the Blissy 100% Mulberry 22-Momme Silk Pillowcase leans on, but the closure and warranty are more thoughtful.

LilySilk 25 Momme Terse Envelope Luxury Pillowcase
#2

LilySilk 25 Momme Terse Envelope Luxury Pillowcase

Noticeably heavier in hand than the 22-momme Brooklinen Mulberry Silk Pillowcase 22 Momme — drapes denser and feels more substantial, but a few testers find 22-momme feels lighter and slippier on the face. Versus the Quince 100% Mulberry Silk Pillowcase, the LilySilk is meaningfully more substantial, but the Quince covers 80% of the same use case at half the cost. The envelope closure mirrors Brooklinen's and avoids the hidden-zipper irritation of the Blissy 100% Mulberry 22-Momme Silk Pillowcase.

Blissy 100% Mulberry 22-Momme Silk Pillowcase
#3

Blissy 100% Mulberry 22-Momme Silk Pillowcase

Built on the same 22-momme Grade 6A mulberry silk as the Quince 100% Mulberry Silk Pillowcase but costs more than twice as much, with brand marketing leaning heavily on clinical-study skin claims. Comparable in fabric quality to the Brooklinen Mulberry Silk Pillowcase 22 Momme, with a hidden zipper instead of envelope closure and a shorter trial window. Lighter and thinner-feeling than the LilySilk 25 Momme Terse Envelope Luxury Pillowcase, which delivers more silk mass for less money.

Quince 100% Mulberry Silk Pillowcase 22 Momme
#4

Quince 100% Mulberry Silk Pillowcase 22 Momme

Built on the same 22-momme charmeuse construction as the Brooklinen Mulberry Silk Pillowcase 22 Momme but at roughly half the price, with a hidden zipper instead of an envelope. Genuinely thinner in hand than the LilySilk 25 Momme Terse Envelope Luxury Pillowcase but covers most of the same use case at less than two-thirds the cost. Lacks the antibacterial silver-ion claims and clinical-study marketing that the Blissy 100% Mulberry 22-Momme Silk Pillowcase relies on for its premium pricing.
