The verdict

The Soundcore Sport X20 is a hooked, IP68-rated workout earbud at $79.99, and durability is what it sells. The hooks extend and rotate to lock the buds in during hard efforts, the buds can be rinsed under a tap afterwards, and battery life is 12 hours with noise cancelling switched off. Cancellation itself is competent rather than class-leading, and the case has no wireless charging. Runners and gym users who want buds that survive sweat and stay put will be happy; anyone shopping on sound quality alone should look further up the range.

Hooks that extend 4mm and rotate 30 degrees

The ear hooks are the whole design: they extend by 4 millimetres and rotate 30 degrees, so the fit gets adjusted to the ear rather than assumed. My Tech Grid took them through a five-mile run and an interval session and the buds did not shift through jumps or direction changes. The tips are soft silicone and the hooks flexible enough not to press, which is the usual failure of sport buds over a long session. The cost is bulk - this is a visibly larger bud than a stemless in-ear, and it looks like gym equipment.

IP68 means you can rinse them under a tap

IP68 covers full dust protection and sustained immersion, which in practice means a sweaty pair gets washed under running water instead of wiped. BestProducts made that the headline practical benefit, and My Tech Grid reported no trouble running in rain. The case closes on a magnetic lid that stays shut in a gym bag. Most buds at this money stop at IPX4 or IPX5, which covers sweat and very little else.

11mm drivers tuned bass-first

The 11-millimetre drivers are tuned for a heavy low end. BestProducts describes the default Soundcore Signature profile as fuel for a workout, which is an accurate account of both its strength and its limit: bass-forward tuning carries a running playlist and crowds a dense mix. The Soundcore app has a full equaliser and presets to pull it back, plus HearID, which runs a hearing test and builds a profile from the result. My Tech Grid's point stands - if accuracy is the priority, this is not the product.

12 hours a charge, and no wireless charging

Battery life is 12 hours with noise cancelling off and 7 with it on, and a five-minute charge returns roughly two hours of playback for the morning you forgot to dock them. The case has no wireless charging, which is the one convenience omission and a fair one at this price. Six microphones handle calls, which holds up on a windy pavement better than a bud this size suggests it would.

Physical buttons instead of touch panels

Controls are clicky physical buttons rather than touch panels, and BestProducts is right that this is the correct choice for a sweaty ear - touch surfaces misfire when wet fingers land on them. Playback, volume and listening mode all work without reaching for the phone. Noise cancellation is average for the price: it takes the edge off gym clatter and traffic hum and does nothing for a subway carriage. Transparency mode matters more here anyway, since these are built for road running.

Strengths

  • +IP68 water and dust resistance allows for washing under running water
  • +12-hour battery life without ANC, dropping to 7 hours with ANC enabled
  • +Secure fit provided by soft, swiveling around-ear hooks for intense workouts
  • +Physical clicky buttons offer more reliable control than touch interfaces
  • +Customizable sound via Soundcore app including HearID hearing test personalization

Watch-outs

  • Charging case lacks wireless charging capability
  • Noise cancellation performance is average compared to higher-priced competitors
