Stainless shell, oval stoneware, locking lid
The Cook & Carry is a stainless-bodied 6-quart cooker with an oval stoneware insert and a gasketed lid that clamps down over it. The oval shape is the right one for a pot roast or a whole chicken, and the insert lifts straight out to the table as a serving dish, which Foodal noted removes a step and a dish from the evening. Extended side handles are moulded for carrying a full pot rather than just lifting it off the counter. Both lid and stoneware go in the dishwasher; the corners of the insert are the part that stays fiddly after a long braise.
One button and a countdown timer
Controls are deliberately plain. A single button cycles High, Low and Warm, and an up-and-down timer sets the cook in 30-minute steps anywhere from 30 minutes to 20 hours, after which the cooker drops to Warm on its own. Foodal found the programmable settings very easy to use and the automatic transition to Warm the feature it leaned on most, and TechGearLab's 4.2 out of 5 reflects a machine that does not make you learn anything. The one drawback of an automatic hold is that it hides the end of the cook: leave a lean cut sitting on Warm all afternoon and it will still overcook.
Steady temperatures and forgiving with vegetables
Serious Eats found it held temperature within the range a slow cooker should occupy, between 180°F and 210°F, which is the whole job — a cooker that overshoots boils a stew instead of stewing it. Foodal's 4.5 out of 5 came with vegetables that came out properly stewed, carrots keeping some bite rather than collapsing into the sauce. Grains and beans behave. The 6-quart capacity is genuinely large: a roast for a full table or a batch of chilli big enough to freeze half, which is the size most households under-buy and then regret.
Small batches brown at the rim
The capacity cuts the other way. A thin layer of food in a wide oval insert sits against a lot of hot ceramic, and a single cup of rice browns around the rim even on the Warm setting rather than cooking evenly. Anything cooked in a small quantity behaves the same way, so this is not a one-or-two-person cooker pressed into occasional big-batch duty; it wants to be at least half full to work properly. Households cooking for one or two should size down rather than assume the timer will compensate.
Heavy to carry, hot to touch
At about 11.9 pounds empty it is a substantial thing to move, and full of stew it is a two-handed, watch-your-step carry despite the handles the name is built around. The stainless sides get genuinely hot in use, which is worth thinking about in a kitchen with small children and worth respecting when transporting a hot pot to a car. Footprint is 17 by 11.8 by 9.8 inches, so it needs dedicated counter or cupboard space. At $89.99 it is fairly priced for what it does; the locking lid and the carrying handles are the reason to choose it over a cheaper cooker, and if meals never leave the house they are not reasons at all.
