One charger for six volts, twelve volts and lithium
The Genius5 covers 6V and 12V lead-acid in its usual flavors plus lithium iron phosphate, detects the chemistry automatically and sets the charge profile itself, and applies thermal compensation so it will not overcharge in a hot garage or undercharge in a cold one. CarAudioNow's Derek Fleming notes it will recover batteries down to 1 volt, with a Force Mode for packs that have gone all the way to zero. Five amps is the right size for cars, motorcycles, mowers and marine batteries; it is not a fast charger for a deeply drained truck battery.
Repair mode brought a bulged battery back
The desulfation repair cycle is the feature owners actually talk about. Lifted Imports' Ben Boxer ran it on a corroded, bulged battery that had been sitting idle and got another six months out of it before replacement, and he also used the low-amperage output to charge a gel cell that an auto parts store's high-current charger could not handle properly. That is the practical case for the Genius5 over a basic charger: it is as much a maintenance and recovery tool as a charger, and it is safe to leave connected indefinitely on a vehicle that sits.
Built like a tool, not an accessory
Boxer, who has run the unit for close to two years, reports the casing still solid and the rubber feet still firmly attached, with the cables flexible and no insulation damage. Connections sit behind rubber port covers rated IP65, the clamp-side cable uses a locking quick-disconnect so you can store it compactly or swap to ring terminals, and the plug is keyed so it only goes in one way. At 1.5 pounds it stows anywhere. CarAudioNow rated it 4.5 out of 5 and Lifted Imports gave it a full 5.
The rough edges are documentation and small batteries
Two genuine gripes. There is no low-current mode, so very small batteries are charged faster than is ideal for them. And the printed material in the box is mostly warnings and warranty text; the full manual lives online, and the mode-selection sequence takes a couple of attempts to learn, with repair mode the fiddliest to reach. A carrying case and ring-terminal leads are separate purchases here where some rivals include them, which is a small but real difference in what you get for the money.
Worth the money over a trickle charger
