Roost Laptop Stand V2

Averaged from 1 published rating + 2 derived from review text
The verdict

The Roost is a folding laptop stand built for people who carry one. It weighs about six ounces, folds to about 1.3 by 1.3 by 13 inches, and slides down the side of a backpack; Pack Hacker's review treats that portability as the whole point. It has three height settings, and its grips hold laptops with a clamshell hinge. It costs more than a desk-bound aluminum stand and will not fit a machine that folds flat.

Six ounces, and 13 inches folded

Folded, the Roost is about 1.3 by 1.3 by 13 inches and weighs about six ounces. That is a slim baton that slides down the side of a backpack next to a laptop rather than something that has to be packed around, and it is why Pack Hacker treats it as travel gear rather than desk furniture. A carry bag is included.

Glass-fiber nylon and Delrin, rated to 132 pounds

The frame is glass-fiber reinforced nylon with Delrin bearing surfaces, a combination chosen for stiffness at low mass rather than for looks. It is rated to hold 132 pounds, far more than any laptop, which is really a statement about how little the structure flexes. In use there is no wobble and no creep down the height range, which is the failure mode that makes cheap folding stands unusable.

Pivoting grips that hold on too well

Two grips clamp the display hinge, and they fit laptops with a clamshell hinge. They hold so firmly that lifting the laptop off often lifts the stand with it, which several reviewers note as the one recurring annoyance. Machines that fold flat or reverse into tablet mode are not compatible at all, so the compatibility question is worth settling before buying.

Three height settings

Height is set with the white clips on the bottom of the stand, which offer three height settings. Adjustment is quick once the mechanism is familiar, and the stand opens and closes in one motion. It only makes ergonomic sense with an external keyboard and mouse, since raising the screen puts the built-in keyboard out of reach.

A V2 still in daily use since 2017

Longevity is the quiet argument. Half Half Travel's reviewer has used a V2 daily since 2017, carrying it through years of travel, with wear that amounts to cosmetics. Roost backs the stand with a lifetime warranty and a 90-day return window. Against a cheap aluminum riser it is expensive; against buying three of those over the same period it is not, provided the portability is actually being used.

Strengths

  • +Durable construction that has lasted over 5 years with daily use
  • +Highly portable with collapsible design measuring about 1.3 x 1.3 x 13 inches when folded
  • +Three height settings for ergonomic positioning
  • +Fits laptops with a clam shell hinge

Watch-outs

  • −More expensive than basic laptop stands
  • −Only compatible with laptops that have clam shell hinge

How it compares

The Roost Laptop Stand stands out for its exceptional portability and durability, unlike the Amazon Basics model which is more basic in design. While the Twelve South Curve offers adjustable tilt and swivel, the Roost's collapsible design makes it ideal for frequent travelers. The BESIGN LS03 and JOYEKY models offer more ergonomic features, but the Roost's 5-year lifespan with daily use sets it apart from most competitors.
