Sixteen feet of cut length
The specification that decides this purchase is cut length: the Cameo 5 will run to 16 feet where a Cricut Maker stops at 12, and for anyone making long vinyl decals, banners or wall lettering that is the difference between one job and a seam. Cutting width stays at the standard 12 inches on the base model, with a wider variant available for larger work. Speed and accuracy are both improved over the previous generation, and the reworked registration marks make print-and-cut jobs line up with less fiddling.
The electrostatic mat is the headline accessory
The static mat holds delicate material flat without adhesive, and Crafty Christie's Creations is clear about why that matters: thin cardstock and paper stop curling and tearing, and weeding afterwards becomes far easier. It is also the fussiest part of the machine. Setup involves a protective sheet and a learning curve, textured materials do not cling reliably, and the first attempt over a wrinkled surface may hold nothing at all. The instructions supplied with it are thin enough that owners work it out by trial.
Silhouette Studio ships without default cut settings
The most consistent complaint is that Silhouette Studio arrives with no default cut settings for this machine, so every material has to be dialled in by hand. Owners upgrading from the CAMEO 4, which had them built in, find this a step backwards, and getting it wrong wastes material. Against that, the software is more capable than Cricut Design Space once learned, supports sketching and cutting in two colours without swapping the blade, and detects tools automatically.
No gridlines on the mat or on screen
Neither the electrostatic mat nor the software provides gridlines, which leaves precise placement to eyeballing or a workaround. A roll feeder that detaches
