The E90 sits in a list of mosquito traps but it is not one. A rechargeable battery heats a metofluthrin puck, and the vapor forms a roughly 20-foot protection zone — about 315 square feet — that mosquitoes will not fly through. Nothing is caught and nothing is killed. Family Handyman's review put it above the alternatives most people reach for, judging it more effective than bug zappers and better in range than citronella candles. Metofluthrin is an EPA-registered synthetic pyrethroid, and because the device repels rather than electrocutes, it does not produce the indiscriminate non-target kills that a UV grid does.
Setup is one button and fifteen minutes
Operation is about as simple as outdoor gear gets: drop in the puck, press the button, and wait 5-15 minutes while the zone establishes. At 1 lb with an integrated grip it moves easily between a patio table, a campsite and a dock, and there is no flame, no cord and no spray. Placement matters more than that simplicity suggests. Thermacell's guidance is to sit the unit upwind of the people being protected and within about 10 feet of them, away from open doorways that would vent the vapor. That slow recharge is worth planning around if you want it running two nights in a row. Consumables are the ongoing cost. Each metofluthrin puck lasts 12 hours of use and runs about $5, so roughly $1.50 per night of protection. Wind above five miles an hour breaks it
The failure mode is wind, and it is not marginal. CNN Underscored's testing of the same vapor system found the zone collapsing within about 2 minutes once a 5 mph breeze picked up, and owner reports describe the same patchy coverage on any breezy evening. There is a workaround — put the unit between yourself and the wind so the vapor drifts over you — but it is fiddly, needs redoing every time the wind shifts, and is not the press-and-forget experience the product promises. On an exposed coastal deck, or anywhere with a steady evening breeze, this is the wrong tool.
It repels tonight and controls nothing
The second limitation is structural rather than situational. The E90 does not reduce the mosquito population in your yard; it pushes mosquitoes out of a circle while the puck is burning, and the zone collapses within minutes of switching off. Next week's mosquitoes are unaffected. A DynaTrap or a propane trap running all season will genuinely thin the population, slowly, which is a different job from this one.
