Live LTE tracking with a refresh measured in seconds
The tracker carries its own LTE SIM rather than borrowing a phone's connection, so the dog stays findable outside WiFi range and across state lines. PCMag's Angela Moscaritolo carried it through months of use and found the location data dependable on hikes and at dog parks. Live tracking refreshes roughly every 15 to 60 seconds, which is fast enough to walk toward a moving dog and slow enough to feel long when you are anxious.
The IP67 housing shrugs off rain and swimming, and at 1.06 ounces it sits on the collar of a dog over eight pounds without weighing anything down. Rover's reviewer reported no slipping or snagging through high-energy play, and the clip held through rough hikes without loosening.
Virtual fences and activity metrics
The virtual fence is the feature owners keep coming back to: draw a safe zone and the app pushes an alert the moment the dog crosses out of it. Alongside that, Tractive logs active minutes, calories burned, sleep and calm time against a profile, which is more useful for noticing a change in routine than for hitting a daily target. An LED and a sound cue on the tracker cover the last few metres in the dark, and the app keeps all of it on one screen without much learning.
Battery falls short of the ten-day claim
Rated battery life is 10 days, and Rover's reviewer measured closer to seven in ordinary use, with the gap widening whenever live tracking gets used. Power-saving zones tied to home WiFi extend it, but registering as many as five networks is a chore and the charger is a proprietary cable rather than USB-C. Coverage is the other limit: in rural areas with weak LTE the tracking degrades, which is exactly where a dog is most likely to go missing.
The subscription, and support that has let owners down
Full function needs a subscription, with the Basic plan starting at $6 a month, so the hardware price is not the whole cost of ownership. Support quality is uneven: OfficerTravels rated its experience 1 out of 5, and owners have described a faulty unit beeping every 20 seconds with follow-up messages going unanswered after an automated first reply. The health tracking is also narrower than a premium pet wearable, covering movement and rest but not eating, drinking, scratching or licking.
