Wirecutter, though, dropped it as a pick over long-term kinking and price. At 10 lb for 50 feet it is a hose for a reel, not a hand.

Two outlets that test hoses for a living rate this the best one made. Wirecutter calls it their upgrade pick and reports more than two years of near-daily use without being able to make it kink, plus the fastest bucket-fill time they measured at 55 seconds. TechGearLab scored it 89 out of 100, the highest in their twelve-hose test, with 9.0 for construction. Eley backs it with a ten-year no-leak warranty and a -40 to 165 degrees F range. It costs $113.23, weighs 0.15 lb per foot, and comes in one unlovely grey.

Bob Vila's tester knotted it, pulled on it and drove over it before scoring durability, quality and couplings all 5 out of 5; The Spruce reached the same conclusion after testing more than 40 hoses and using this one almost daily for six months. TechGearLab weighed it at 0.08 lb per foot, gave it 83 out of 100 and an Editors' Choice. The dissent is real: Wirecutter tested it and passed, and its 35 degrees F floor is the worst here.

The 8BS50 is a plain heavy rubber hose, and the two outlets that tested it disagree about how good that is. TechGearLab put it at 64 out of 100, tenth of twelve, faulting it for twisting, looping and weight, and framed it as a hose best left as a permanent fixture. Bob Vila backed a car over it, scored durability 5 out of 5 and gave it their best-rubber award. Both are describing the same object: a thick rubber wall with crush-proof nickel-plated brass couplings, no clever geometry, and enough mass that how you store it decides whether you like it.

The FatMax is a pro-grade hose built around Orbit's three-ply PolyFusion process, rated to 500 PSI burst and freeze-tested. Popular Mechanics measured the highest flow rate of any 5/8-inch hose they tested and drove a 4,500-pound truck over the fittings without damage. Gardening Products Review, who used it in a garden for months, scored it 3 out of 5 after the collar bent the hose into a permanent out-of-round kink that restricted flow, and their household threw it out.
