PolyFusion and the 500 PSI Number
Orbit, which manufactures this hose under licence for Stanley, uses a three-ply PolyFusion process that bonds premium polyurethane to PVC rather than using either alone. The stated goal is polyurethane's flexibility and abrasion resistance without polyurethane's weight and cost. The headline result is a 500 PSI burst rating, roughly three times what the Flexzilla Garden Hose with SwivelGrip, the Eley 5/8-Inch Polyurethane Garden Hose and the Dramm ColorStorm Premium Rubber Hose are rated for, and it is why this hose is marketed at trades rather than gardeners. The number to read alongside it is the working pressure, which Orbit publishes at only 80 PSI. Couplings are anodized aluminum with a titanium coating and a 3/4 in. female hose thread, and the body is described as scratch and abrasion resistant, freeze tested and UV resistant.
The Instrumented Test at Popular Mechanics
Popular Mechanics runs the most quantitative protocol of any outlet covering this category: a spring scale to measure the force needed to drag a water-filled hose across grass and concrete, and a stopwatch on an unrestricted five-gallon fill for flow rate. The FatMax topped their flow measurement, and their Key Specs table records 587.3 gph alongside a measured weight of 7.8 lb and the 500 psi burst figure. Their body text describes the same result as "the highest flow rate of any 5/8-inch hose tested," though it renders the unit as gallons per minute where the spec table says per hour; the table is the figure to rely on. On the fittings they wrote that "while the hose fittings aren't marketed as crushproof, the large-diameter swivel grips protected the fittings when we drove over them with a 4,500-pound truck."
The same testing surfaced its handling character honestly. "A bigger hose does hold more water, so it was no surprise the Fatmax took a little more effort to drag out to full length, on concrete it took 9 pounds of force, while on grass it was a little less, at 8.6 pounds." And on kink behaviour: "during testing, we found it tends to twist out of tight coils before it kinks." Popular Mechanics listed "heavy" as their one con.
The Long-Term Test That Went Badly
Gardening Products Review used a 50-foot FatMax in an actual garden over several months and reached a much less favourable conclusion, scoring it 3 out of 5, their lowest score of the three hoses they rated. Their reviewer, a licensed arborist, was measured about general kinking: "It kinked a little less than vinyl, plastic, or thinner rubber hoses, but it did kink. The warmer the weather (and, therefore, the more pliable the hose) and the more corners or obstacles I dragged the hose around, the worse the kinking became." He was also positive about toughness: "I dragged it over concrete, rocks and gravel and even after being trampled and run over with a wheelbarrow, the hose remained unscathed," and "metal couplings are always best, and the FATMAX hose has forged aluminum titanium coated couplings. Plus, there's an integrated washer at the female end."
The Hose Reel Failure Mode
The specific defect that sank it is worth understanding, because it is avoidable. Wound onto a reel, the rigid collar at the coupling bends the hose over the drum at a hard angle. "The end result was that the hose was immediately bent over the hose collar and caused not only a permanent kink, but also caused the hose to go out-of-round (it became an oval shape)." That damage did not recover: "The big problem with the kink at the hose collar interface was that it restricted water flow. Even when the hose was fully un-reeled, the kink and oval shape remained at the hose collar." A hose that permanently loses its bore where it meets the fitting has lost the flow advantage Popular Mechanics measured, which is the whole reason to buy it.
The Detail That Should Weigh Heaviest
Most negative findings are recoverable annoyances. This one is not. The same reviewer recorded the outcome: "After several months of use, my wife because so frustrated with this hose (she does most of the watering in our garden) that she threw it away." A household discarding a $50 hose after a season is a stronger signal than any sub-score, because it reflects cumulative daily use rather than a bench protocol. He added a geographic caveat that narrows the product further: "The kinking problem is especially bad in warmer temperatures so this would not be the best hose for you if you live in a hot area." That is the single largest reason this hose sits at the bottom of this ranking despite the best measured flow in the group.
The Counter-Evidence From The Spruce
It is not a unanimous verdict. The Spruce tested the 100-foot version for over six months and named it their most durable pick. Their tester Kimberly "was most impressed by the consistent water pressure and how easy it was to connect to her spigot and hose nozzle," and they reported that "it remains pliable enough for easy recall on the hose reel, and its heavy-duty nature makes her confident she won't need to buy another hose for a while." On weight they noted that "at a little over 14 pounds, the 100-foot hose is one of the heaviest on our list, but despite its weight, our tester could manually coil the hose and store it on a hose stand, even without the help of a reel." Their cons were that it is "pretty heavy when full" and "a bit difficult to disconnect." One tester's reel destroyed the hose and another's did not.
How Thin the Comparative Evidence Is
One thing to be clear about: this is the least-benchmarked hose in this guide. Neither TechGearLab nor Wirecutter included it in their comparative tests, so there is no score placing it head-to-head against the other five. Only Gardening Products Review has published a numeric rating for it, and that rating is a 3. Popular Mechanics and The Spruce both cover it in detail without assigning a score. Orbit publishes no warranty period, no weight and no drinking-water certification on its own product page, though Gardening Products Review reports the hose is labelled drinking-water safe. Buy it for the measured flow rate and the burst rating, which are documented, rather than for a comparative track record, which does not exist.
The Honest Recommendation
This hose ranks last here for one reason, and it is not the pressure rating or the fittings. It is that the only outlet to use it in an ordinary garden over months, rather than on a jobsite or under instruments, scored it 3 out of 5 and the household threw it out. That is disqualifying for routine garden watering when the Flexzilla Garden Hose with SwivelGrip costs less and had a tester who could not induce a kink at all.
Where the FatMax still earns its place is the narrow case its specifications describe: a high-flow feed for a pressure washer or sprayer, used in cold weather, where 500 PSI burst and freeze-tested construction are hard requirements. If you buy it for that, the mitigation for the documented failure is straightforward. Do not fold it at the coupling. Leave a straight run of at least a foot and a half past the collar before the first bend, avoid tight reel drums, and keep water in the line while repositioning, which is exactly the condition under which Popular Mechanics found it behaves well.
