Ten outlets, half of them on the battery
The BR1500G is a 1500VA, 865W line-interactive unit with ten NEMA 5-15R outlets, and only half of those are battery-backed — the rest are surge-only. That split is the single most common complaint about the design, because a desk with a PC, monitor, router, modem and NAS fills the protected side immediately and leaves the peripherals unprotected. The rear panel adds Ethernet and coax pass-through and a data port on an unusual RJ-45 connector that carries USB or serial for PC management.
Runtime is minutes, not tens of minutes
Custom PC Review measured 3.8 minutes at full load and 12.8 minutes at half, figures that line up with the manufacturer's own numbers. That is enough to survive a flicker and to shut a machine down in an orderly way, and nothing beyond that. Transfer time is rated at 8ms typical and 12ms maximum, which is comfortably inside what a computer power supply will ride through. Two sealed lead-acid cells do the work, replaceable by the owner at around $38.50 and good for roughly three years.
The fan never stops
The defining flaw is that the fan runs continuously, at full speed, at ordinary room temperature, with the battery fully charged and nothing plugged in. Owner reports put it near 45 dB at a metre, which is loud enough to intrude in a quiet office and loud enough to sit under the audio of a machine it is meant to protect. APC's position is that constant fan operation is by design on this model and cannot be changed. Idle power draw is correspondingly poor at roughly 20 watts with no load, double the older BR1500.
PowerChute Personal Edition does the monitoring
The bundled PowerChute Personal Edition is the strongest part of the package. Custom PC Review notes it can set voltage regulation points, configure automatic shutdown of connected devices and adjust sensitivity to electrical noise, and it can be told either to conserve battery or to keep the machine running as long as possible. NikkTech adds that automatic voltage regulation with boost and trim is exposed through the same interface. A front LCD covers load percentage and estimated time remaining without needing the software at all.
Stepped sine wave, not a pure one
Output on battery is a stepped approximation of a sine wave rather than a true one. For a typical PC power supply that is fine; for audio equipment, some active-PFC supplies and anything with a motor it is a compromise, and buyers with that kind of load should move up to a pure sine wave unit. NikkTech's read is that the BR1500G is friendlier to the systems attached to it than APC's Smart-UPS line, with no shutdown problems during their evaluation, which counts for something in a category where compatibility surprises are common.
Pricing that only makes sense in the US
The same unit is priced very differently by region, and the European figure is high enough to change the recommendation entirely — competitors that cost more in the US undercut it there. Combined with the fan noise, that makes this a unit to buy on a US listing for a room where constant airflow noise is acceptable, and to skip elsewhere. The three published ratings on file cluster tightly at 4 out of 5 and 4.56 out of 5, which is roughly where a capable machine with one loud, unfixable flaw belongs.
