Three modes, from touch-up to set-in stains
The ProHeat 2X splits its work three ways. Express lays down the least water and, per Bob Vila's testing, has the carpet dry again in around 30 minutes, which makes it practical for maintenance rather than an event you plan a day around. Deep clean uses more solution for grubby carpet and takes several hours to dry.
Max clean uses the most solution and the strongest suction and is the setting Bob Vila found handled the hardest jobs, including set-in wine. Smart Bark reached the same conclusion about the mode structure: three genuinely distinct settings rather than a dial with marketing labels on it.
Pet accidents are what it is actually for
Bob Vila's testing ran from ordinary dirt marks through to serious pet accidents, and the combination of the CleanShot pretreater and the OXY formula dealt with the difficult end of that range, including cat urine and skunk. The pretreater is the part that matters: it puts concentrated solution directly onto a single spot before the machine works it, which is a different operation from cleaning a whole room.
Smart Bark rated the two-in-one pet upholstery tool highly, and between it, the 3-inch tough stain tool and the 8-foot hose the machine covers stairs and furniture as well as floors.
Heatwave keeps water warm, it does not heat it
This is the specification most often misread. Heatwave maintains the temperature of the water you put in; it does not raise it. Fill the tank with warm tap water, not cold and not boiling, and Bob Vila found the temperature held steady through the clean. Smart Bark's account matches: the benefit is consistency across a session rather than heat the machine generates.
It is a modest inconvenience in practice, but it means the machine's cleaning power partly depends on your hot tap, which is not obvious from the box.
Front-heavy, bulky and loud
Bob Vila's clearest criticism is about handling. The machine is front-heavy, which makes carrying it awkward, particularly with a full tank, and the weight distribution works against manoeuvring it in tight spaces. Smart Bark's complaint is storage: it has a large footprint and there is no folding it away in a small flat.
It is also noisy in use, loud enough that owners notice, and it is designed for carpet and upholstery only. On homes with mostly hard flooring it has very little to do.
Ten minutes to assemble, then it earns its keep
Bob Vila had it assembled in ten minutes with a Phillips screwdriver and one carry handle to attach, and it comes with the attachments and trial-size solutions needed to start immediately. Smart Bark's value argument is the straightforward one: for a household with pets, a machine you own outright quickly costs less than repeat rentals or professional visits.
The buyer this fits owns a dog or a cat, has carpet, and cleans it several times a year rather than once. Anyone with hard floors, or nowhere to store something this size, should look at a smaller machine.
