The 8BS50 is a plain heavy rubber hose, and the two outlets that tested it disagree about how good that is. TechGearLab put it at 64 out of 100, tenth of twelve, faulting it for twisting, looping and weight, and framed it as a hose best left as a permanent fixture. Bob Vila backed a car over it, scored durability 5 out of 5 and gave it their best-rubber award. Both are describing the same object: a thick rubber wall with crush-proof nickel-plated brass couplings, no clever geometry, and enough mass that how you store it decides whether you like it.

The case for a plain rubber hose
Every other hose in this guide is doing something with materials or geometry. The 8BS50 is not: it is 50 feet of reinforced rubber with brass couplings, the construction garden hoses have used for decades. The virtue of that is that there is very little to go wrong, and rubber has a track record in this application that newer polymer blends do not yet have.
Briggs & Stratton lists a shipping weight of about 10 lb for the 50-foot version and describes industrial-style reinforcing for high burst strength. What they do not publish is any number at all: no burst pressure, no working pressure, no temperature range and no warranty term appear on the product page, which is a real transparency gap at this price.
Where TechGearLab marked it down
TechGearLab scored the 8BS50 64 out of 100, tenth of twelve, with convenience 7.5, performance 5.5, construction quality 6.0 and variety 6.0. The 5.5 on performance is the figure that matters, because performance in their scheme covers kink resistance, coil memory, connector leaks and spray behaviour.
Their listed cons were that it twists and loops easily and that it is heavy, set against pros of heavy duty construction and kinks that roll out easily. Their reviewer framed it as a fixture rather than a tool, preferring it for jobs where the hose stays put and does not need much flexibility or manoeuvrability. They measured a 102.42-foot sample at 19.1 lb, the heaviest absolute weight in their lineup.
The car test it passed
Bob Vila's testing backed a car over each hose at 55 psi, and the Briggs & Stratton entry took their best-rubber award. It came through the crush test with no visible damage, showed no leaking at either the spigot or the nozzle end, and stayed curlable around the base of a tree while full of water.
The 500 psi burst figure repeated in that coverage is a manufacturer claim relayed by the tester rather than a measurement, and it is not a number Briggs & Stratton publishes anywhere. Build quality landed at 3 out of 5, their lowest quality sub-score in that test, with the specific complaint that the couplings have no grips for control.
Reconciling two very different verdicts
One test says it twists and loops easily; the other says it survived everything thrown at it. Both are true, and the difference is in how each was used. A thick rubber hose with pronounced coil memory is faultless on a reel and fights back when a hundred feet of it is hand-dragged around a yard.
Bob Vila's own note sits between the two: durability at 5 out of 5 alongside an observation that it is a little stiffer than the other hoses in that lineup, which is what thick rubber does. Read the two verdicts as instructions rather than as a disagreement.
Weight and cold are the real constraints
At 0.19 lb per foot this is among the heaviest hoses in the category. Over 50 feet that is around 10 lb and manageable; at 100 feet it is a hose you plan a route for rather than casually reposition.
Cold is the second constraint. Bob Vila found it still flexible at 40 degrees Fahrenheit though not as flexible as at 60, and listed increasing stiffness in the cold as a con. Since Briggs & Stratton publishes no rated minimum temperature, there is no way to know where that curve ends.
What the price actually reflects
At $53.92 on Amazon and $52.08 direct, the 8BS50 sits mid-pack in this guide, and two cheaper hoses outscored it at TechGearLab. What you are paying for is the material rather than the test results: rubber is heavier, more crush-tolerant and more expensive to ship than a polymer hose, and the price follows the material.
That is a defensible purchase for a specific buyer: someone who wants a durable rubber hose at around $50, who will leave it reeled or connected at a spigot, and who is not going to carry it up and down a property. Anyone moving a hose by hand several times a session should spend less on something lighter, and anyone who wants rubber but hates coil memory should spend more on a hose that solves exactly the problem TechGearLab docked this one for.

How it compares
Against the Dramm ColorStorm Premium Rubber Hose, the other all-rubber hose here, the 8BS50 is the cheaper and worse-handling of the two: TechGearLab scored the Dramm well ahead on performance and traced the difference to Dramm's hexagonal profile. It is the heaviest hose in this guide by absolute weight. What it has over the Teknor Apex zero-G and the Flexzilla Garden Hose with SwivelGrip is a thick rubber wall that shrugged off a car tyre in Bob Vila's test, and unlike the Stanley FatMax BDS6650 nobody has reported it taking a permanent set.
