Thirty inches, and what fits inside it
The crate measures 30 inches long, 18 wide and 20 high, which HomeStrand puts at comfortable for dogs in the 20 to 40 pound range. Above that the geometry stops working: a dog needs room to stand, turn and lie flat, and a 40-pound-plus dog in this crate is boxed in rather than housed. Buyers with a growing puppy should size to the adult dog and use the divider, not buy twice.
Two doors, front and side
Dual-door access is the feature that earns its keep day to day. The front door handles the normal in-and-out; the side door is what makes the crate usable when it is pushed against a wall or wedged beside furniture, and it makes feeding and cleaning far less awkward. It is also what lets a nervous dog enter from whichever direction it prefers rather than being pointed at a single opening.
A leak-proof pan that slides out
The removable plastic tray is the difference between a crate that gets cleaned and one that does not. It slides out from the base, contains accidents rather than letting them reach the floor, and wipes down in seconds. The wire itself carries a rust-resistant finish, which matters for a crate that will be hosed or wiped repeatedly, though how well that coating holds up in a damp garage over years is not something any of the coverage establishes.
Thinner wire than the crates it competes with
This is the honest weakness. Business Insider's Alex Rennie describes the MidWest Life Stages crate as having a heavy-duty wire frame, and the FDW does not match that gauge. For a calm dog it is irrelevant; for a determined chewer or a powerful escape artist it is the whole question. Wire spacing also draws complaints, with owners reporting paws and noses getting caught during folding or movement — worth a hand on the dog before collapsing it.
Folds flat, with some effort
The crate collapses to a flat panel for storage or a car boot, which is the main reason to choose wire over moulded plastic. Folding takes more force than the marketing suggests, particularly the first few times, and the assembled crate is heavy enough to be a two-hand carry. Neither is a fault so much as a reality of a metal crate that has to be rigid when open.
A budget crate judged as one
HomeStrand's score of 3 out of 5 and the Business Insider guide's more favourable read describe the same object from different angles: an inexpensive, practical crate for a medium dog that does the basic job and gives up wire thickness and refinement to get there. Owners of large or powerful breeds should spend more; owners of a mid-sized dog who need something that folds into a cupboard are the buyers this crate is actually for.
