A 4.3-inch colour screen only 0.8 inches deep
TechHive describes an industrial-looking thermostat with curved edges and a 4.3-inch colour touchscreen sitting just 0.8 inches off the wall, among the thinnest on the market. White numerals on black read clearly across a room, and the display shifts blue for cooling and orange for heating. Black and white bezels are offered. TechHive's hardware complaint is that no decorative backplate is bundled to cover the holes an older thermostat left behind, which higher-end models do include.
No learning algorithm, and that is the point
The Sensi Touch 2 does not learn. PCMag's assessment is that this is a no-frills thermostat that never asks the owner to learn complicated technology the way a Nest does, and that the absence of machine learning reads as a feature for anyone who wants predictable behaviour rather than an algorithm second-guessing a schedule. What it does offer is remote control, detailed scheduling, geofencing and support for temperature sensors, which covers what most households actually change.
The C-wire adapter is an extra 28 dollars
Installation is DIY-friendly: the app walks through shutting off power, photographing and labelling the existing wiring with supplied stickers, choosing terminals and confirming the furnace type, and the job runs about ten minutes for someone comfortable with it. The catch is the C-wire. A home without one needs an adapter kit, which TechHive notes costs an extra $28 on top of the thermostat, and that is easy to miss when comparing shelf prices.
Room sensors are 40 dollars each, sold separately
The thermostat supports up to 15 additional room sensors and none of them are in the box, at $40 each. For a house where one room runs cold, that turns a mid-priced thermostat into a more expensive one, and it is the clearest gap against competitors that bundle a sensor. Apple HomeKit is also unsupported, so an Apple-centric smart home has to work around it, although Alexa, Google Assistant and Samsung SmartThings all work.
Works the moment it has power
One detail several reviews return to is that the thermostat powers up and controls the system immediately after installation, before any app setup, so a household is never left without heat while an account is created. TechHive praises the screen's responsiveness for the same reason: the touchscreen is a complete control surface rather than a status display that funnels every change into a phone. Scheduling and geofencing then arrive once the app is connected.
Priced roughly a hundred dollars under a Nest or Ecobee Premium
TechHive noted it selling for nearly $100 less than the Nest Learning Thermostat and Ecobee Premium at the time of review, against an MSRP of $209.99, and that gap is the case for it. PCMag reaches the same conclusion from the other direction, a solid balance of features and price for a buyer who does not need machine learning. Add the sensor and adapter costs before deciding the gap is as wide as it first looks.
