Quad-band, with two separate 6GHz radios
Four radios, not three: 2.4GHz, 5GHz and two independent 6GHz bands, adding to a nominal 30000Mbps. The second 6GHz radio is what makes the difference in a two-node kit, because it can carry the backhaul between units without stealing capacity from clients. Multi-Link Operation lets a capable device hold several bands at once and switch between them mid-session, and 4K-QAM raises throughput again for hardware that supports it.
11,529 Mbps peak on a 6GHz band
PCMag recorded what it called astonishing throughput, with a 6GHz band peaking at 11,529Mbps. HighSpeedInternet.com logged 3,326Mbps close to the router and 832Mbps at 40 feet, and found the 6GHz band needed a channel change before it behaved. Twelve internal antennas and 16 front-end modules do the physical work. Tom's Hardware was the most reserved of the cited reviews, rating the system below the rest of them.
Two 10Gbps ports, and not one 2.5GbE
Each unit carries a 10GbE WAN/LAN port, a second 10GbE LAN port, three 1GbE ports and USB 3.0. The gap in the middle is the problem: there is no 2.5GbE anywhere, so a NAS or a desktop with a 2.5G adapter connects at gigabit unless it takes one of the two 10G ports. PCMag names this the clearest hardware misstep at this price.
ASUSWRT 5.0 with security and VPN included
The firmware is the reason to choose ASUS over most rivals. AiProtection Pro, parental controls, VPN client and server, dual WAN, link aggregation and the Smart Home Master subnetworks are all included for the life of the hardware rather than sold as a subscription. Root Nation singles out Smart Home Master for splitting kids, IoT and VPN traffic onto separate networks. A web console sits behind the app for anyone who wants firewall and IPv6 detail.
Settings changes need a full restart
A large number of settings apply only after a reboot, and the reboot is not quick. On a system this configurable that adds up during the first week, and it is the most common complaint across the cited reviews. Early firmware also needed updates to settle, which is normal for new ASUS hardware but worth knowing before making this the only network in the house.
8,000 square feet from two nodes
ASUS rates the two-pack at up to 8,000 square feet, and the reviews broadly support the claim for typical construction. The units are large, run without a fan, and are heavy enough that wall mounting needs a proper anchor. AFC certification, which would let the 6GHz radios run at higher power, was still pending at the time of these reviews.
